Goju-Ryu karate is now one of the most popular styles of karate practised in the world today and is the one taught at Kaishi Karate School.
The philosophy of Goju-Ryu is one of balance and harmony. The founder of our style, Chojun Miyagi created Goju-Ryu by following similar precepts found in Chinese martial arts. “Go” means to be hard or resilient, while “Ju” means to be soft or yielding. In this way, Goju-Ryu is the school of “hard/soft.” While this philosophy applies to the technical and physical aspects of Goju-Ryu, it is also the underlying feeling. In the study of Goju-Ryu, we hope to attain balance and harmony not only in our practice, but also in our mind, body, and spirit.
Kaishi Karate School has been established in Edgware and associated areas for eleven years. Formerly Sensei Sheena taught under the name of White Crane Karate School. However, having completed her training to attain third dan black belt level, now has a school of her own naming.
Kaishi has different meanings dependent upon the kanji lettering used. Two of these meanings are how Sensei Sheena thinks of her school. Firstly, kaishi means beginning or start. Secondly it also means ‘thinking of others by way of using our heart’. Sensei Sheena’s aim is to enable all students to benefit from learning karate in a well-rounded way; physically and emotionally.
The Torii gate symbol depicts our journey as we move forward in our understanding of karate.
